The former World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or winner is currently running in the 2017 Liberian presidential election meaning he could become his country’s head of state. He has come a long way since he was banging in goals for the likes of AC Milan, PSG, Monaco and Chelsea. However, Weah has now been involved in Liberian politics for the best part of 12 years and is currently a senator. Could he soon be his country’s leader?

George Weah has quite the list of accolades to his name.

The Liberian won the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year award and also won Ligue 1 once and Serie A twice, amongst many other achievements.

However, the 51-year-old could be about to achieve another incredible feat – becoming president of his country.

The former AC Milan, Chelsea, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain player has attempted to run for president before but lost out previously.

In 2014 he was elected to the senate as a candidate for Congress of Democratic Change but he still had his eyes set on the presidency.

The 2017 Liberian presidential election is now in full swing and, with the votes currently being counted, the ex-striker is leading his main rival.

A candidate needs more than 50% of the votes for outright victory and if no-one achieves that, a second round will be held in November.

At the moment it looks like a second round will have to take place.

However, Weah is by no means the only footballer to turn to politics.

Here, talkSPORT have put together a list of ten footballers that moved into governance.
